Medieval Art Periods

This period of the art extends for more than 1000 years, taking most, if not all, of its theme and inspiration from religious ideas, and depicting the stories in the Holy Bible, lives of the saints, angels and Blessed Virgin Mary.

The era is divided into the Celtic, Early Christian, Romanesque, Gothic, Byzantine, among other less known styles. Artists of this period draw their inspiration from the Church and the great Roman Empire. The subject later on embraced other secular concepts.

Arts of the period are categorized into frescos, panel painting, manuscript illumination and the stained glass. The frescos can be seen in mural form that applied paint to wet plaster and then dried. The panel paintings were done by using eggs that would be applied in the panels, while the manuscript illumination was used to adorn books or codices. And finally, the stained glass art is used to depict images, mostly religious themes, in building windows and churches.
